1. akFAORO » HI-STYLE HOLLADAZE
Last night was AMAZING. As you can see, the book is OUT! We had a fabulous launch and fundraiser w/our new fashion community friends, 69 Vintage Collective & The Deadly Nightshades.
The Style Council rocked V69 looks that turned many a head, and some of them were even flashing personalized SOOS Rocks swag directly inspired by their own fantastic outfits these past ten weeks (THX BRYN & JANE!!).
DJ Rod Skimmins held the future boogie down (if you’re still deciding upon NYE plans, you might want to Bang The Party). Saidah Baba Talibah testiflied w/peace, love and butterflies (& if you rly love her, pls fan fund her upcoming 2010 album, S(C)ream).
The stylebook will be available to purchase for $4 at 69 Vintage Collective (1207 Bloor St. W.) & Art Starts (1746 Eglinton Ave. W.). All $$ goes towards the Style Council. Be curious! Pick up a copy.

  2. This is Janeba, the lady wearing those big classic hoops.
At some point, we wandered into the Dollar Store. Sasha found an incredible blue (royal? cobalt?) knit dress with sequinned details near the shoulders that she’s planning to Lisa Turtle-ize (we are anxiously waiting the DIY post on this). A Christmas ornament was mistakenly broken, but only cost us 75 cents (the owner was very nice). As you can see, we got lost in the long aisles, re-discovering cheap chic.

  3. So, we walked into this beauty salon a few blocks from Art Starts. We had already encountered a few shops that wouldn’t let us take shots, but after talking with the owner, she relented for this staged fashion shot courtesy of our very own Murissa (standing with her back to us).
The concept? Ladies at the salon, under the dryer, gossiping about the latest issue of Share. The models? (L to R) Sherifa, Sasha, Janeba.

  4. Jeba caught mid-stride, possibly reacting to something she spied in a shop window, or because it was very cold and she was just wearing a light plaid jacket.

  5. The (Belated) second-part of our Week Two Recap, told in photos taken by photographer Alyssa Katherine Faoro: just prior to this shot, we had met last Saturday (Halloween!) for the photography workshop with photographer Alexis Finch. Which didn’t exactly begin as a workshop per se, but a shoot! Alexis shot all the Style Councilors for the ‘personal style’ full shot that will be a part of their double-page spread in the Style Book. (We’ll have sneak peeks of those shots in the near future.)
After the shoot (which turned the Art Starts office near Dufferin & Eglinton into a mini studio!), we sat down and discussed photography. Alexis shared with us examples of her work, which have been published in Sway Magazine and Peace Magazine. She told us stories about being sent down south to shoot the Reverend Al Green, or spending a day with Lupe Fiasco (who’s apparently very into his clothing shopping). She also told us how important it is with photography to tell a story, and find (street style) photos that truly capture our take on the neighborhood.
Then, the disposables! Everyone got their own disposable and we went out on Eglinton to shoot photos that caught the styles of the hood. This is us exiting the Art Starts’ doors, discussing how we’d get shots of particular shop interiors (mode of action: ask for permission).
